Applying for Owner-Builder Approval

Before you can apply for a building permit from your local government, you may need owner-builder approval from the Building Services Board. Here is what is involved.

Approval Required for Work Over $20,000

If the estimated value of your building work (labour and materials combined) exceeds $20,000, you must obtain owner-builder approval from the Building Services Board before applying for a building permit.

How to apply for Owner-Builder Approval in WA

Step 1:Complete an approved Owner Builder course

You must complete an owner-builder course with Western Australian–specific content within 24 months of your application.
 This ABE Education course satisfies that requirement.

Step 2: Hold a valid White Card 

Under the Building Services (Registration) Act 2011, you must hold a current General Construction Induction Training Card (White Card) or WA Blue Card.
 This must be provided as evidence when submitting Form 75.

Step 3: Lodge your application with the LGIRS

Submit Form 75: Approval — Owner-builder along with the applicable fee using the Owner-Builder Approval Payment Form.
